O-Scale West参加で訪米中に買った本をもう一冊紹介します。

これは、全米の黄金時代の著名な旅客列車を精密なイラストで描いたものです。実物の写真や、当時の絵葉書などの資料も含まれており、説明文も詳しく書かれていますので、読み物としても意義のある本だと思います。

著者のMark Wegman氏は、幼少期をセントルイス近辺で過ごされ、物心ついたころから、近くを通るWabashやIllinois Centralの列車を見たり、夏休みには家族で全米各地に列車で旅行をされ、アメリカの旅客列車の時代の最後を経験されたそうです。本のそでに記載された紹介文の中には、「鉄道会社のオリジナルの図面や記録、塗料の見本」を「15年以上にわたって調査した」成果であると書かれており、アメリカの旅客列車の黄金時代を記録に残そうという意欲作だと感じました。

中身は、3つの年代に分け、その年代ごとに代表的な列車を紹介しています。下記に目次を転載します。わかる範囲でWikipediaへのリンクを振っておきました。3つの年代のいずれにも、NYCの20th Century LimitedとPRRのBroadway Limitedが乗っています。永遠のライバルという感じでしょうか。
